For six years I didn't consistently use a flue cover and didn't have any real problems. Then last winter, I parked my Westy in back where the winds and the unpaved alley make some dust--and I didn't have a cover since it cracked apart in the fall.

I had lots of crude in the combustion chamber in the spring.

So where you park makes a difference. Out here in the West, we have dust--something you probably don't worry about in New England.
