I, too, use a laptop mount. The trick is to get it located so that it does not interfere with access to the shifter and doesn't protrude into Mrs Squirrel's space. Once there, I find that direct sun on the screen often makes viewing of maps (I use DeLorme Topo 6) pretty much impossible. Others put laptops on the floor. They clearly aren't as clum-footed as I, and are able to focus on middle distances between the 20 inches my reading glasses optimize and the far distances my naked eyes can see. Progressive lenses (for those of you who were just thinking of chiming in here) are for people who don't sit on, wash, or lose glasses on a monthly basis.
