Not really. While not commonly known here, my understanding is that VW made more diesel and turbo diesel 'Vanagons' than waterboxer equipped models over the years and did not vary the rear springs to accommodate this. The 1.9 TDI is just a slightly larger displacement close relative of the 1.6TD. Later 4 cyl TDI engines have more differences but the same basic configuration. By 'Vanagons' I refer to all the variations on the T3 platform and what in the UK is called T25. Mark
