Sometimes, 'maybe' going into a starter and cleaning things up might keep you going a bit longer, but it's more a 'get home from Mexico' type of thing really.

The cable from the solenoid to the motor part of the starter is not a ground cable, it's the main load going into the starter, and if it's fried or weak, it's because it's been drawing a lot of current for years and years, even indicating that they starter is pretty tired.

I am considering the suggestions of several list members regarding trying to disassemble my starter and lube/clean it. But what about the ground strap that goes from the solenoid to the starter. I think mine is in pretty bad shape. From what I recall, it's not so easy to replace that because of how it's held on. I'll also call around to see if anyone rebuilds them in my area.
