Myself and my family have been driving VW diesels since 1980, and have yet to replace an injection pump, and that includes at least 5 vehicles with over 300k kms on them. The current pump on my Westy is from my old Jetta (as is the engine), and has about 450k kms on it and runs perfectly. It is just now showing some signs of leakage, likely due to ULSD fuel's effects on the original seals, but they are >20 years old after all. The GM 6.2 is notorious for many things including the pumps; I'd venture that the VW-d pumps are nearer the other end of the scale, at least for light duty diesels - not really a fair comparison.

And rebuilds are not that bad - I have two spare pumps I picked up cheap (less than $100) both of which run, but I plan to rebuild when I get around to it.
