The spring clamps keep relatively constant pressure on the hose regardless of thermal expansion. The expand-contract cycle can sometimes result in a screw-type clamp loosening up enough to leak or even let the hose pop off.

I always seem to struggle with the spring clamps, but I'm sure if i had a > proper pair the right type of pliers it would go a bit easier. >

A decent set of cable-type spring clamp pliers is an enormous improvement over the traditional "make-do" tools , ye olde channel-locks or vise-grips.
