No stupid questions. Yes, there is an advantage to the spring-type clamp, also known as "constant-tension" (or something like that) clamps, in that they can expand and contract as needed. Screw type clamps can be too loose, leaking when the hose and associated fitting contract, or too tight, cutting into the hose when parts expand. I used water pump pliers for a long time, and then finally go some inexpensive hose-clamp pliers. One of those "why didn't I do this sooner?" situations. Even the cheap ones have a locking device to keep the clamp open, and the jaws rotate so you can get into tight spaces.
