I too was a victim of a frozen accelerator cable. For the price, I don't think I would bother with trying to fix an old cable. Just install a new one and be done with it. It's less than an hour to install. I have an 89 automatic, and the accelerator stuck damn near wide open as I tried to kick things down to free the cable. I put the vehicle in neutral and cut the engine, but guess what, the lights go out when you do that. I turned on to a side street with no lights, no power steering, no power brakes, and the road was icy too, so the van started to slide. I stopped a few inches short of a fence. It's mighty dangerous folks, and I wouldn't want do it again. Just replace the damn thing! My two cents worth.
