IHMO, for the trouble of replacing it, why not go with "new"?

For the extra $50 you get a part with likely some kind of warranty, and likely rebuilt better than the average Vanagon owner can do.

Personally I figure if I can afford it, then what's my time worth? In this case, $50 extra compared to the time taken to rebuild it, the learning curve involved in rebuilding and possibly the cost of tools required to do it. Depends on the part though. i.e. Although not exactly the same thing, I think overhauling or maintaining my CV's is worth my time. No special tools, and I know what parts are being used and can see what condition they're in.

I'd buy "new" in this case.
