This was about 6 yrs ago. There's only one local yard anymore and they also have the city towing contract. Small plot of land and they only crush once a month or so. No-one else cared to make the hour+ drive one way.

I'm thinking FREE isn't a bad price to pay to haul off the carcass since they have their costs: 1) pay the driver for 45min to and hour + running costs on the wrecker 2) in VA at least, the gas tanks have to be removed and carcass inspected for nasties. 3) disposal costs for the tank and tires, since they can't be crushed

If the scrap value was about $100 then I'd say they broke even at best.
