Wonder if a cable lubricator would work -- available at most better
motorcycle shops -- example here:

It clamps over one end of the cable, then you use an aerosol spray
lube (I like Lubriplate Chain and Cable Fluid), even WD40 would be
good especially if you have moisture in there.
