Just returned from San Diego and while hanging out at the beach, ran into a guy from Washington state, who was driving a really nice '80 Westy with something like 71K original miles. He had it re-painted in the original brown color and the top as well with new upholstery (Sewfine) inside. Like a lot of us, he owns another Westy... another '80 with even fewer miles! He bought a fridge door and face frame (for the molding) on E-Bay and installed it in the side of the clothes closet. A perfect match. His other mod was installing a Propex 1800 under the clothes closet, to the left of the engine hatch, with air ducted to the front of the closet, in the lower left corner below the original door. He said it wasn't difficult to remove the closet to install the heater (no air conditioning). He's working on his PhD at SIO, and, uh.., well spending a lot of time in his Westy. He is not on this list.

While in San Diego, I bought a 2.5# Halotron fire extinguisher. This is an approved (but not as good) and cheaper alternative to Halon or Halon blends. For those who want the ultimate in protection, the company, Amerex, makes what they call a "small vehicle, front engine, monitored and automatic system". No reason it could not be install in a Vanagon. See it here: http://www.amerex-fire.com/Literature/SMVS.pdf No price given. Probably have to get it from a local distributor. Jerry
