I have to respectfully disagree because I feel that if this list only
works for some people, and not for others, discussing it /is/ on-topic
because without a working list, there isn't a list.
Say we had a clubhouse where we met with other Vanagon owners to discuss
Vanagon stuff. While we're imagining this we might as well have a nice
fireplace there, and some beers, and some attractive women to serve said
beers . . . but I digress. Say that by mutual agreement non-Vanagon topics
were not to be discussed. And say that one winter the roof developed a
really ugly leak over some of the chairs so that some members were getting
soaked. Say one or two of those members wanted to mention this little
issue -- should they be told to get a real roof and shut up? Maybe so, but
that's not a club I'd belong to, thankyouverymuch.
I also disagree that the issue that some of us occasionally experience is
attributable to gmail.* I've used gmail for years and have several
accounts, some of which receive much more traffic than the vanagon list
generates, and only the vanagon list has these occasional blackouts.
Because of that it's difficult to tell whether it is Gerry snubbing gmail,
or gmail getting all huffy, or some mutual interface constipation that
causes the slowdowns. Late last year, when there was a similar blackout,
Jim Arnott said that he found that Gerry had a mess of logfiles or
something which needed to be cleaned out (I could be misremembering this,
Jim, and if so, please advise).
(Takes deep breath). So IM (not so H) O, that this could be a
Gerry-related issue cannot be discounted, and Gerry-related issues should
be discussable. It is, after all, Gerry.vanagon.com
