recently i drove an 89 audi for a month
the accelerator had a sharp wire sticking out of it
right at the place worn by nearly 20 years of driving ...
i can assure you the vehicle was not slow nor automatic
the sticky wire was at first an irritant then...
it became something for my foot to do as i was driving it back and forth
across usa

this of course is not a why there is metal ... only more evidence of same in

a similar application
