Hi,

Just one comment about that cardboard - I'm sure it serves some critical airflow function, but it does something else too... I have two vans that have rust perforation just below lower edge of the radiator opening above the front bumper. It started from the inside and appears to have been caused by the crud that accumulated where that cardboard contacts the body. One of the vans is a little rusty in general, but the other is otherwise rust-free except for that spot. I picked out gobs of decomposed pine needles and leaves when I removed the cardboard this summer. I'd advise checking that spot in general as a preventative measure, but certainly taking the opportunity to thoroughly clean and apply some rust proofing material when you have the radiator out.

I just replaced mine, you can buy the three pieces from Volks Cafe. You need to save the two metal clips, screws, and plastic buttons from the side pieces. The bottom piece uses three screws and three larger fender style washers.

Hi everyone.

I'm ready to install the rad on my air cooled --> water cooled project. Got the upper support in!

What's left of the donors' rad cardboard is toast.

Can I install this stuff after rad is in?

Not that it likely makes any diff, but this for a new aluminum Behr (Vanagon) rad into an 81 with 85' lower/upper supports.

Thanks!

Neil.
