Heated air intakes actually started around 1968 and was common on most vehicles. The idea was to prevent carburetor icing, promote better combustion and of course reduce emissions. It has really been found that with fuel injection already atomizing the fuel there is very little benefit. A preheat system just adds more restriction and the warmer air has less density so it makes less power.

I remember a few weeks back somebody mentioned heated air intakes on the list, and I noticed this was on the page of fuel-saving tips someone posted a link too. Anybody tried some kind of heated air intake in a vanagon?
