Could be the wrong gasket. Good point. ...... I just checked. It is about 1mm thick and looks to be a single layer. I couldn't tear it in half. But if it isn't the right one, that might explain the damage.

I was warned by a lister on VW Vortex 2.0 list, that the pumps with the plastic impellers tend to self destruct.

The pump + gasket in the pic are what I just pulled off a relatively low mileage used Jetta 2.0 I picked up for my engine conversion. Glad I did!

FWIW, the pump says "Germany, WWO" and has what looks like an Audi stamp.

I'm replacing the coolant pump, gaskets and belts while the engine is still out.
