How soon we forget. The locking gas caps are from the last "energy crisis" where gas was today's equivalent of $3.20 a gallon. Back in the early 80's. People were getting their gas siphoned all the time, that's where the locking caps came from. Sometime after that since gas stayed the same price, about $1.25 a gallon for the next 15 years they started making regular caps again. (And cars that got worse and worse gas mileage...)

And with the price of gas going up so high and the economy going so poorly, stealing gas by siphoning is a very real possibility............
