Bill, I found a nice shape used unit that I can sell you for $25. It has both rollers on it (the aluminum piece at the bottom of the door) and they are in good condition. The larger of the two that sits vertically is actually $75 now from the VW dealer. Not sure how you could make a similar bearing work. The horizontal one looks like a normal bearing that you might be able to get aftermarket but the vertical one is a whole different beasty. Let me know if you are interested.
