Karl, ?I gave er' the old college try today and it worked - it was a lot less stuck than I thought it was and I barely applied any force using the tool when it came unstuck. Thanks for all your help, and thanks to everyone who contributed!

I don't know anymore if I lubed it afterwards, but a drop of oil shouldn't hurt. Mine wasn't used for a long time and the tool allows to to apply a larger force and you don't have to be afraid of braking the knob. And with all these things, apply a "gentle' amount of force rather than "brute" force
