Subject: Repacking Manual Steering Box Grease
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed;

Folks: I think it was Westyman that sold me a manual steering box to retro fit on my 90 GL, and before I go to that trouble, I was wondering if anyone had ever replaced the grease inside the housing. There's an allen head something or another below the splined shaft that goes up to the steering column, but I'm not sure how it comes apart or if it needs to. Anyone ever done this? I've only been a member of this list for 11 years, but I don't ever recall a posting to this effect. Is it possible to slip a large thick hose over one end and force the old grease out while pushing the new stuff in, or should I run solvent through there first to get rid of the old stuff? The shaft seal is in really good condition, but it doesn't act like it wants to come out either. Manufacture date on the rack is 2/84 if that helps.

I was going to put a synthetic grease back in there unless a moly would be better. I know VW wants their special grease in there, but how special is it really?

Thanks

DM&FS
