Hi Peter,
Yeah, the Bostig Zetec Core kit is a great way to go if you have the space
to work and don't mind getting your hands dirty. All of the ECU programing
is taken care of at Bostig before the unit ships, so the Passive Anti-Theft
system is totally functional (housed in the waterproof ECU box) as is the
Fail-Safe Cooling feature and the Hardware Limited Operation Strategy. The
Core kit also includes the SCT Code Reader / Reflasher that allows you to
change tunes whenever you would like. It only takes about a minute and a
few button presses to change between tunes.
I was so blown away with the quality of the materials in my conversion kit
as well as the technical support I received from Bostig during my conversion
that I have been working with Jim and Brady on the documentation project for
the upcoming Bostig 2.0 release. In the very near future, all Zetec
conversion kits will be shipping with a complete set of DVDs and written
manuals covering removal of the stock motor, installation of the Zetec,
troubleshooting and a long term maintenance program. As far as I know,
there is nobody else currently doing anything like this in the conversion
market. It is a lot of work, but history has shown that a well educated
Vangon fanatic is a happy Vanagon fanatic.
If you have any other questions about the Bostig conversion, feel free to
email me back, or you can go straight to the source at www.bostig.com. All
of the various contact information is listed on the site.
Jay

Jay,
Thanks for that! I had no idea there was a kit available like that from
Bostig, or that the engines were so inexpensive or widely available.
I just told someone they would be pricey and hard to find - shows how much
I know about that! I would be very interested in knowing more
this. For example, how did the PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) work for
the transplant? Did you have to get the ECU reprogrammed or was that not a
concern?
I was under the impression that the PATS was an integral part of it all...
