I have a policy for dealing these situations. Walk softly and carry a big lunch bag. Don't forget that some smog check jockeys don't eat meat. Juicy burgers are great at obstructing dyno readings. Then you can mop up the slop and run your TDi on it.

Seriously, Jeff is right. Your emissions guy & your smog check referee can be your best friend. Oh yeah, I know the lady who send out those letters to buy your gross polluter. Her office is also responsible for those 1(800) EXH-AUST whistle- blower hotline.
