Hi all,

It's Friday, and I'm stumped on some irrelevant stuff, so I thought I'd email you folks and see if anyone can help.

I just got a new laptop - IBM compatible, running XP, which is the same as my old (falling apart) one. I'm trying to deal with loading software on it, and having various problems:

1. I have a legal copy of Office 2003. I loaded it on the new machine. Word and Excel work, but when I run Outlook it tells me the MAPI32.DLL file is corrupted or not compatible, and that might be because I had installed another messaging system. I haven't. I reinstalled Office, it does the same. The new computer has a trial version of Office 2007, and I did unthinkingly start that version of Outlook, thinking it would essentially turn out to be a legal update of my 2003 Office. (Foolish me!) I don't know if that's why 2003 won't work. Does anyone have any suggestions on this?

2. I have a pirated copy of SPSS which I assume I can't move over to the new machine. Does anyone know of freeware statistical packages that can do basic work (cross tabs, comparative means, etc.) on SPSS (.sav) data files?

3. A friend suggested I use openoffice instead of MS Office. Alas, it won't solve my Outlook problems, but I'm still considering it. Has anyone used it? What do you think?

4. I also have a pirated copy of Photoshop, which I also assume I can't move to the new machine. I could buy Photoshop, it's nothing like as expensive as SPSS, but are there freeware packages that do similar things?

Any advice would be most appreciated!

Joy
