When reassembling my dash for the same job (amongst other stuff) I didn't put the plug to the instrument cluster on properly. I had similar goofy electrical behaviour.

I second the vote of checking those connections.

And although unlikely, check connections to your fuse panel and make sure the relays are seated properly. It's worth inspecting the connections anyway. :)
