David, I did this for a customer last year. I put it under the luggage rack near the front edge and just let it magnetize itself to the roof. It worked fine there with the luggage rack installed. I ran the wire under the pop top canvas and then behind the interior panels around to the front of the van. It was an invisible and seamless install that worked well.
