This is a very important area to watch for as there are two different pumps
supplied and although the wiring colors from the pump are the same, the
polarity is NOT.
This is taken from an official letter I have translated from Westfalia from
over 12 years ago (I supply this with each new pump I sell from my stash):
************************
On March 19, 1992, Westfalia Werke issued a Parts Information Sheet
regarding the change in polarity of the cable colors on the VW 255-070-805
(Westfalia 900-001-526-259) Immersible Pump for the Fresh Water Tanks on
Westfalia Campers. The following is a translation in English in regards to
the proper connection of the wiring harness.
Apart from the conversion to unlubricated-safe operation, we have also
changed the polarity of the electrical cables of the above Immersible Pump
standards. The polarity of the electrical cables on the original pump is on
the cover next to the pump cable and output of the pump
The original product (lettering "bevauge" on the pump cover/lid) had the
following polarity:
BLUE: + (Positive 12V), BROWN: - (Negative Ground)
The new product (no lettering on the pump cover/lid) now has the following
polarity:
BLUE: - (Negative Ground), BROWN: + (Positive 12V)
*********************
Please note that most Westys have their original pump (with the lettering
"bevauge" on the pump cover/lid), so they use the original polarity. BUT, if
you're replacing the pump or if a previous owner replaced the pump it may
use the newer polarity.
Off the top, I don't remember the polarity of the black/yellow from the
harness, so it might be wise to detrmine with a VOM or test light to see
which one is hot (+) before connecting it to the pump.
