This version is mounted to to nose of the van, but the same idea could most likely be adapted to the rear of the van instead. The only worry that I would have with the swing-away hinge style carrier you are describing would be finding a suitable mounting location that could handle all of the torsional force from the weight of the scooter when the mount is in the open position.
