While not unheard of, it's certainly not the most common of Vanagon failures.

My '85 Westy has 210,000 miles on it and my '84 Westy has 213,000 miles, both with the original unbroken shifters. I have another high mileage '84 Westy (parts donor) but the actual mileage is not known as the dash pod isn't the original. I've never experienced one of these breaking ... but I know it is possible.
