Sure, Mike, and when I had one Vanagon I thought they were all dead nuts reliable and got 32 MPG Imperial. Apparently not. :)

In my 4 or so years on the List I've never seen anyone post re broken shifter until Allan, ergo, not a common problem.

In considering this, I can't really think of a part that's a problem. The head seals are stupid, the upper control arm bushings wear out - hang on, maybe the ignition switch qualifies as crap - almost every van I know has had the switch replaced at least once, even my Mom's low mileage Westy.
