I am currently in the process of doing what you are talking about. The donor is an 86' syncro and the recipient is an 87' automatic 2wd. Here are some things for converting from auto to stick: need to trade the brake / clutch pedal assembly need to install clutch master cylinder and hard line back to slave cyl trade shifter and shift linkage need to trade rear axles (auto ones have a long and a short one) need to rewire backup light switch from auto shifter to switch on syncro tranny need to rewire park / neutral switch on auto shifter (connect two red wires so it thinks it is in park or it won't start) here are some pics of my progress so far: http://www.flickr.com/photos/subyvanagon David Hines 90' Suby Carat > Date: Tue, 18 Mar 2008 23:01:00 -0700> From: wvukidsdoc@YAHOO.COM> Subject: 2wd to syncro (need to talk to someone who has done it)> To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM> > Hi all. Not that anyone will recall me as it is my every 3-4 year return to the list, but shit I was one of the near originals, and damn I miss the one real list. (Joel, you still hanging around, stat is now 3 Vanagons in AK, and a '78 Scirocco, and a bus or two, and two 2.5 liter EV engines and a near new auto tranny for one in the garage.)> > Anyway no reminiscing, subject line says it all, and yeah, I delved through the now inane archives, and looked at the words on the syncro yahoo groups site, but I want to talk to a human that has done it, by pmail and perhaps by phone. Never did look that hard to me, and I know a lot of people have done it successfully now, if you are one of those people and don't mind the chatting, please drop me an email. This will be either a '86 or '88 syncro (depending on which I decide is worse to cut up in the driveway) onto an '87 automatic (yeah I know but the body is pristine) Country Homes camper. The other direction is not warranted body wise onto either syncro particularly.> > Thanks to anyone who can help, sorry to waste bandwidth to those who can't.> > John Anderson> > > > ---------------------------------> Never miss a thing.
