When I had my 84 Westy, it was using about 1qt every 1000 mi. The rings were doing their job, but there was some oil getting sucked into the valve guides. Once while descending down a long steep road into Jackson Hole, WY. the motor was revving high in 2nd gear (3rd gear forced me to use the brakes too much) and when I got to the bottom of the mountain smoke was pouring out of the exhaust. I thought the engine was on fire at first. Never happened again, but I never have been on such a long, steep road.
