Great Info Jim!! Thanks a Bunch.

But Now I can ask the REAL Question. Since Now I know the Tach part numbers did change. At Bostig I am told I must change the Tach on my 85 to a 86-91 for reasons of being more sensitive for the to pick up the tach signal. The 85 is suppose to be LESS sensitive in sensing the signal. But IF the only diff is the Buzzer then I should be good to go with the 85.

I guess my questions are:

1) Will I harm the brain of the bostig using the 85 tach but if it is the same as the up to 91 just no oil buzzer then I should be Fine 2) If it is different (being not sensitive to pick up the signal) would it damage the bostig brain. My theory is it just wouldnt work or pick up the signal. 3) I did have a late model cluster once and when I put it in it would buzz so I just sold it. The tach worked in the 85 but the tach was from a 86-91 vanagon. would a 85 tach work in a stock 86-91 vanagon? 4) Are there any resistance checks I can make to my tach to see if it would be the same internally as the 86-91? 5) Anyone got a 86-91 they would like to let me borrow to check out? or anyone got one to sell or trade for something? I think Ive got a new 2.1L water pump as well as other items for trade if needed.

Just trying to figure out if I need to swap out the whole mess or just play with the thing and see what happens. I asked Bostig and they said I need to swap it but couldnt give me more info on why it wouldnt work. I certainly dont want to fry my brain and Im not afraid to swap my cluster. I just want to figure out what the actual specs that make it work and or not work.

Thanks again. Jonce

Jonce -

1) Yes - 251 919 253 A & 251 919 253 H 2) Yes - 251 919 253 A & 251 919 253 H 3) Yes - there are three:

255 919 253 - Black Face Tach on Wolfsburg Edition 1984s 251 919 253 A - Multi-Colored Face - Original on 1985 Models 251 919 253 H - Multi-Colored Face - Original on 86-91 models, replacement for 1985

In otherwords, the A is superseded to the H.

The difference is not so much in the Tachometers, but the Instrument Foils and their appropriate connections to operate the Dynamic Oil Pressure Buzzer System on 86-91 models, specifically for the Multi-Colored Tachometers. Unfortunately, I do not know if the 255 919 253 or the 251 919 253 A Tachs have the appropriate connections for the Buzzer System (I kinda doubt it).

Please see my PDF on Cluster Upgrades on my website:

http://www.oldvolkshome.com/late_van_cluster_install.pdf

I try to use 1985 Clusters for the upgrade whenever possible to avoid the extra work in defeating the Buzzer System that is not present on 80-84 models.

This is why collect and retain the old VW Parts Fiche. Loads of info that ETKA does not (nor will it ever) have.

Ive got a 84 and a 85 Vanagon. The 84 has a Clock and I found the early 84 Tach (Black Face) that in theory will just plug in and go.

The 85 that was built in Late 84 is has the multi color tach that looks like the up to 91 vanagon version.

My Questions is:

1) Is there a part number for the Tach with the multicolor face. 2) with that part number are there more then 1 version of the multi color face tach? 3) does any one know how Many Versions or revisions of the tach there might be?

Reason for asking. Im 95% done with my bostig conversion and the Tach is suppose to be different in the 85 from the 86-91. BUT there is no known part number that will or will not work. So Im doing a bit of homework to see if my tach that could be from a 85-91 vanagon since when I purchased my vanagon it has 4 spare dash pods with it. I think Ive got 2 still and the 1 still in the 85. I will check them tonight for part numbers just in case.

Thanks for any and all help in advance.
