IIRC, that 'buzzer-with-key-in-ignition' circuit goes back to the early 70's on all VW's, they called it an 'anti-theft' system. I guess, if heeded, it helps to remind people to take their keys with them, to make it harder for thieves to steal your car. Maybe back to 1968, even?
