Speaking of that stupid part on there - the plastic coolant tower that gets
brittle and breaks, far better it broke on your during this job than
somewhere in the boonies.
I consider it basically unacceptable that they put on a weird part like
that, that you could barely bypass or substitute out in remote areas
somewhere if you had too. I just had that happen too, and once they are 15+
years old, and any work is being done in the area, it should just be
replace. They break very easily once they are old. Lucky we can get them
too. Really dumb design.
So I'd say, get a new one anyway, and DO be rough on the one that's it
there, because if it's gong to break, you want to know now, and not at some
very inconvenient time somewhere else. They're not that fun to change by
themselves either, must better while doing other work in the area.
Yeah, isn't that clever that they made the shift linkage so it'll go
together two ways, only one of which is correct. Such design dumbness has
killed people in aircraft. You know Murphy's Law - if there is a way to
screw it up, someone will.

I just did this job and I do not have a lift. We raised the back of the van
on jack stands and had no problem. The transmission is pretty easy to
remove and it is not that heavy. Here are a couple extras you may want to
consider buying before starting the job:
Input shaft seal
Axle seals
Axle seal caps
Rear main seal
Shift linkage boots
Additionally, be careful not to accidentally apply any unnecessary force
to the rear hear heater hose. I happened to break the plastic coolant tower
causing an extra week of down time.
Also, the shift linkage plate bolts to the a flange on the side of the
tranny. When you re-attach the part it gets bolted to the front side of the
flange. It will fit on the back side, but you will not be able to shift
into 2nd or 4th.
