I recently went to go investigate a "GOOD DEAL" on an '84 sunroof van. It
was an automatic, which was not my cup of tea, but based on the description
it should have been a gem for $800! I even called the guy and talked to him,
he said it ran when he parked it, and i asked about the body and if it had
seam rust his response was "NO. Only 'minor surface rust'" which to me means
the bumpers are rusty.....or something like that. Surface rust BEHIND the
bumper....
Well we got a gang together and drove out on a frigid morning to investigate
the bounty. Boy were we in for a suprise....
It looked almost as if someone had sanded all the paint down so that nothing
had any luster, and in some panels they'd sanded to bare metal, resulting in
MAJOR surface rust.....like a whole panel.
The sunroof was open (probably rusted open), and while the guy assured us
that it "ran in october", he didn't specify what year.....
The engine was missing components (Exhaust components), major oxidation on
everything.....four flat tires....
And he STILL wanted $800 for it. Would not budge. It really wasn't even
worth that in parts.....
So there is an uneducated group of people in this world that think 15-20
year old vanagons fetch 23 window 40-50 year old Split window prices. They
may someday, but thats not today, and probably not tommorow.
