If your upholstery is like the tan 'shreadomatic' corderroy in my 85 Wolfsbeurg Weekender you want a mterial more durable than that for sure ? Shouldn't be too hard if you check with a serious fabric store, or upholstery shops.

Cant' imaging what you mean by 'pre-sensor on the intake.'

Air Flow Meter ? maybe that's it. I consider them a weak link, but saying that isn't a Diagnosis.

How are vanagon engines supposed to get repaired back to proper running if people are just guessing at parts and disconnecting things ? I empthacize too because even if you take it to car shops it's very hard to find one very clever and experienced with vanagons. I sort through these all the time, and it can take me a while too sometimes.

But all the checks and tests are right in the Bentley manual. It's almost like the skill of real troubleshooting and diagnosing got lost.

Like oh....anyone check the throttle switches, or ohm check the temp sensor the ECU reads through ? ..stuff like that ya know.

My 85 Weekender with auto trans and 2.1 watberboxer engine gets 16 on the highway which I'm not that happy with. I don't expect to see that ever get above 17 to 18 tops with a waterboxer engine.

With a Subaru 2.2 I would hope to see 20 to 22 mpg.

Scott

Hello everyone, I am a new member here at the List. I am very happy to be a part of the group and hope to be able to learn alot from everyone here.

I have two questions:

One- How many miles to the gallon have some people been able get on e 1985 VW Vanagon Westy? Mine is the Weekender package. My poor fuel economy (about 14 - 15 mpg) I thought was perhaps due to my O2 sensor. I just purchased the van last Nov. and experienced sluggishness during takeoff after the van was warm. the o2 light was on so I figured that the sensor was old and replaced it. While waiting to replace it I disconnected it and no more problem with sputtering. After my new o2 arrived I replaced it and still the same problem. it is now still disconnected. There is also a pre-sensor or something on the intake. I have tried different combo's of connection of pre-sensor connected and o2 disconnected and vice versa but the o2 disconnected is the best. Help Please!!!! My mileage is low and fuel is high

Two - I was also wondering does anyone know of a source that would have the original courderoy upholstry. My seat bottoms are ragged but my backs are fine. I would love to match that tan material.

Thanks everyone!!!!

Leron
