The give away that this is an "unloaded" test is there are no readings for NOx. The major purpose of the dyno tests is to test the NOx reduction equipment. That is EGR, catalyst, and proper timing settings. Of course water boxers do not have EGR so those test really come down to the catalyst, O2 sensor, and ignition timing.

The 81 air cooled is a bit different as it has a cat but no O2 sensor unless it is a California version. Just for giggles, in NY the idle test limits for 81 and later are 220 HC and 1.2 CO so it would have failed here. These readings do indicate that there is some room for improvement.

The idle speed and mixture should be 850-950 rpm and the CO should be closer to 1% or even lower pre cat. The CO at .5% and HC at 57 indicate that at speed the engine is running really well but most likely the cat is tired or the engine is not running well and the cat is really working hard. Since the .5% CO is really the FI goal, my bet is a bad cat.

Congrats on the pass Karl - it always feels good to me when the vehicle passes.

Conversely, I always end up in the room beside the dyno feeling anxious, as though I should have studied harder!

Is that a dyno test in Delaware an unloaded test?
