*sigh* I remember as a kid my brother and I crawling all over the back seat of my parent's Buick on long trips. Or one of us would sleep on the seat and the other on the floor. If we'd had something like a Vanagon it would have been a romper room in back. Not safe to be sure, but on the other hand it's kinda sad to think of today's kids straightjacketed into car seats for hours on end (yes, mine included -- I'm glad they're all almost old enough to just use the seat belts). I always had good luck just cinching the lap belt really tight to hold the seat in place. I never had a car new enough to use the tether anchors that the new car seats have.
