We used a Rug Doctor on our grey cloth interior and rugs. While it gets the stuff "wetter" than you probably want and requires some air-drying time (or close up a small heater in the van to speed drying), the machine forces the soapy solution into the fabric and the vacuums most of it back out again immediately and cleans pretty well. Worth the effort and inconvenience.
