I don't think there is a gasket used here - neither of my vans had them. The boot is supposed to keep the connections dry I guess (which it doesn't do very well after 20 years of...) My '82 had the bulb connectors come apart in pieces of rust when I pulled them. I think I was able to swap in some bulb connectors from old Rabbit parts I had lying around. Perhaps some thin foam cut to fit the lens would work as a gasket, or thin rubber might work better - some foams trap water and encourage rust.
