hey all

that lighter fluid smell is likely PERC http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dry_cleaning

the fluid used for dry cleaning ... it is funny stuff indeed ... dip a plastic handled screw driver in it and you will have a shank only in about a minute yet "safe" on textiles ... as with most volatile cleaners ventilation is key ....

my chrysler lebaron convertible had terrible mold on every thing after a two year idle time i striped it dwon to the mettle laid all the carpet and seats out in the lane and scrubbed them half to death with an expensive carpet cleaner then hosed them off and let dry in the sun ...

my suggestion for your issue would be much the same ... dont be afraid of water ... it will dry in the sun... and scrub like you are sentenced to hard labour and the bull is standing over you good luck yours
