I'm planning to do the same. In fact, yesterday I removed the step plate/carpet edge on the entry to check how a newer, aluminum one would fit/look.

To your question: Some newer mods have jump seats behind the front seats but I doubt Vans were that evolved in '84. After all, in '81 they were using angle iron for the carpet edge/step plate!

Have you determined where, exactly the underlayment extends?

It appears to me it extends below the aft seat but stops at the front seat bulkhead and at the appliances on the port side. If that's true, I plan to install Pergo. At $100, it's kindofa no brainer. If it extends underneath the stove/fridge, cabs, I'm likely to tackle it next season.
