I used it and can vouch for Zolltans' method.

Even though I have relatively limited wrenching experience, I can't
see a reason to ever use a floor jack to take out a Vanagon engine
again.

Here's a pic of mine (though the 2x4 unit is shorter now and I used
blocks to raise height of it):

The only problem I had, was that the plastic ducting on the air cooled
engine got damaged. Likely due to operator error. Otherwise it worked
awesome, and was especially useful for tweaking the position of the
Jetta engine for my conversion.
