Assuming the shift linkage is ok, I would look to switch first.

I don't see any other electrical part that would cause that to happen.

So you've put it in reverse once now? (lights are still on?)

Are the leads and casing in good shape and secure to the switch?

Before removing the switch, take off the leads, have someone move the shifter for you while you watch to check linkage movement, then use a VOM or check-light to test switch. If no helper, maybe you could operate the linkage while under there.
