Subject: roof racks for wide kayaks
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1

Hello ladies and gents,

I am looking to purchase a roof rack for my Westy. It will be mainly used to transport two 32 inch wide kayaks. Side by side the two kayaks will be 64 inches wide (obviously), while the pop top is only 55 inch wide. I could use Yakima’s J-shaped cradles (Hull Raisers) which holds the kayaks perpendicular to the roof eliminating any concerns about the kayaks extending beyond the edge of the pop top, but would have the kayaks sticking 3 feet above the top of the van which is already quite tall. Alternatively, I could use Yakima’s 77 inch bars and their Mako Aero saddles to hold the kayaks flat on the roof racks, with plenty of room to hang over the edge.

Whichever mode I go with, I plan to use Yakimas Wide Body mounts bolted to the pop top and their A1 rain gutter towers. I assume that if I mount the Wide Body’s high enough I won’t need the Hi Rise spacers??

I am looking for any thoughts on the options listed above, or other things I haven’t considered.

Thanks a bunch Jake 82 AC Westy
