To elaborate on this (first time using the torch "wrench" is a bit unnerving.....) metal expands when heated (usually). The idea is, that you want to have the oil PAN expand, but not the bolt, so that it will be easier for the bolt to come out. Just remember that your oil temperature can be over 200 degrees. So using the torch for a minute or two really isn't going to hurt. Using a propane torch (as opposed to say an oxy-acetelyne torch) also means that you really aren't going to burn a hole through your oil pan.
