It is possible to have a non-magnetic steel. In fact many stainless steels are much less magnetic than plain iron. High manganese steel is another possible material. Regular carbon steels are usually fairly magnetic. Nickel is also highly magnetic (it's frequently a component of steel). But chromium (chrome plating) isn't.
