I have used a "T" bar (or angle iron) bolted to the flywheel. I used two of the pressure plate bolts and holes to secure the bar to the flywheel. You should then be able to torque them. (I got that trick from the "Hot to Keep your VW Alive Book". I not have the flywheel lock tool (from the Bus Depot) which is a lot more convenient to use.
