Option #1. Well...it has been mentioned, and I'm certainly not trying to start a separate discussion here...but once my wife drove around in our van with a 2.2 Suby engine in it, she instantly started talking about selling her 2003 Legacy Limited so that SHE could buy a Syncro and have me put a 2.5 in it. She's actually actively looking for one!

Option #2. Drive a good bit north, into bear/mountain lion country (in your other car if you have one, rent if not). Toss a couple of Luna bars in her bivy sack and sleep out under the stars for 3-4 days. Return home and suggest to your wife (after shaking has ceased) that you purchase a z-bed to install into Gringo, or simply suggest purchasing a full camper.

Option #3. If you are of the appropriate age and disposition, make or adopt small children (maybe 2) and suggest taking a trip similar to Option #2 - maternal instincts kick in and you are looking at a new-to-you full camper, or at least a z-bed. (funny enough - this is what facilitated our Vanagon purchase - one too many bear encounters...She's from TX like you, and not exactly used to those critters.)
